It&#8217;s the only way to describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rebekah_diamond\/status\/1415416863199268876\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rebekah_diamond\/status\/1415416863199268876\">two kids under twelve<\/a>, we <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Samanticka\/status\/1393188103586816001\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Samanticka\/status\/1393188103586816001\">never fully relaxed<\/a> into the &#8220;hot vaxx summer&#8221; everyone was planning.  But in June both kids were finally out of the house in camps and preschool&#8211;all day, every day.  Frankly it took a little while to get used to concentrating through a full workday again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things already were going a little sideways in May, when the CDC told everyone vaccinated they could take their masks off&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GammaCounter\/status\/1394408706373267461\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GammaCounter\/status\/1394408706373267461\">with<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2021\/05\/cdc-loosened-mask-guidance-to-encourage-vaccination-it-failed-spectacularly\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2021\/05\/cdc-loosened-mask-guidance-to-encourage-vaccination-it-failed-spectacularly\/\">predictable effects<\/a>.  Thankfully our kids&#8217; care still required them.  Still, it was a strange feeling to be the only ones <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthinsider.com\/2021\/06\/22\/protecting-unvaccinated-children-as-covid-19-restrictions-are-lifted\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/publichealthinsider.com\/2021\/06\/22\/protecting-unvaccinated-children-as-covid-19-restrictions-are-lifted\/\">still wearing masks<\/a> on the playground at the end of June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already then there were rumbles of bad news on the horizon: <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mo-state-wire-michael-brown-coronavirus-pandemic-health-89fa995c59397228d8d56e1ab45890ab\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mo-state-wire-michael-brown-coronavirus-pandemic-health-89fa995c59397228d8d56e1ab45890ab\/\">increasing case rates<\/a> in highly unvaccinated areas from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/angie_rasmussen\/status\/1415672890926772224\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/angie_rasmussen\/status\/1415672890926772224\">much more<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-06-24\/covid-delta-kappa-variant-spread-in-fleeting-moment-nsw-vic\/100238680\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-06-24\/covid-delta-kappa-variant-spread-in-fleeting-moment-nsw-vic\/100238680\">transmissible<\/a> &#8220;Delta variant.&#8221;  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andregonzalesnm\/status\/1411312902800216068\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andregonzalesnm\/status\/1411312902800216068\">Rumors<\/a>, and then increasing certainty, that the Delta variant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-23\/pfizer-shot-just-39-effective-in-halting-delta-israel-says\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-23\/pfizer-shot-just-39-effective-in-halting-delta-israel-says\">could break through<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/08\/breakthrough-covid-19-cases-may-be-a-bigger-problem.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/08\/breakthrough-covid-19-cases-may-be-a-bigger-problem.html\">full vaccination<\/a>.  Vaccination still seemed to provide good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/california-politics\/article\/Delta-variant-California-COVID-19-masks-open-where-16296087.php\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/california-politics\/article\/Delta-variant-California-COVID-19-masks-open-where-16296087.php\">protection against hospitalization<\/a>, but it soon became clear that vaccinated people <em>could<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lollardfish\/status\/1427269839568179203\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lollardfish\/status\/1427269839568179203\">get sick<\/a>, could <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashishkjha\/status\/1420929121362776067\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashishkjha\/status\/1420929121362776067\/\">transmit<\/a> the virus, could <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paulmromer\/status\/1420519048568258560\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paulmromer\/status\/1420519048568258560\">get long COVID<\/a>, could <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DataDrivenMD\/status\/1420931469938024449\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DataDrivenMD\/status\/1420931469938024449\">get hospitalized<\/a>, could die.  Even the rhetoric that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/07\/the-kids-were-safe-from-covid-the-whole-time.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/07\/the-kids-were-safe-from-covid-the-whole-time.html\">kids don&#8217;t get sick<\/a>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7927578\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7927578\/\">took<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jddneary\/status\/1422899297574694918\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jddneary\/status\/1422899297574694918\">hit<\/a>.  Approval for the pediatric vaccine is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/fda-expects-kids-under-12-to-start-getting-vaccinated-in-midwinter\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/fda-expects-kids-under-12-to-start-getting-vaccinated-in-midwinter\/\">months away<\/a>, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmerAcadPeds\/status\/1424856784355876866\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmerAcadPeds\/status\/1424856784355876866\">AAP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/pediatricians-plead-fda-move-quickly-covid-vaccine-kids-n1276191\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/pediatricians-plead-fda-move-quickly-covid-vaccine-kids-n1276191\">begging<\/a> the FDA to speed approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through it all the steady drumbeat of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/krupali\/status\/1415317821030948877\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/krupali\/status\/1415317821030948877\">resistance<\/a> to public health measures has only intensified.  Red state governors have banned mask mandates and vaccine mandates, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kavitapmd\/status\/1421273572501303301\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kavitapmd\/status\/1421273572501303301\">mounting case rates<\/a>.  Schools have seen significant protests in opposition to mask wearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s taken awhile to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bob_Wachter\/status\/1422759849671024642\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bob_Wachter\/status\/1422759849671024642\">get our minds around these changes<\/a>.  We&#8217;re having to question assumptions about the end of the pandemic that we clung to for a long time: especially, that once we have a vaccine it will all be over.  The future, sadly, looks endemic: we will all likely get it, repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime: schools nationwide are opening for the fall, many without any precautions, and are seeing truly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashtonpittman\/status\/1425949682782588931\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashtonpittman\/status\/1425949682782588931\">astonishing infection rates<\/a>.  Schoolchildren are being <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/denise_dewald\/status\/1426318459609169920\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/denise_dewald\/status\/1426318459609169920\">hospitalized<\/a> and dying.  Case counts are <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/08\/too-many-people-are-dying-of-covid-19-right-now.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/08\/too-many-people-are-dying-of-covid-19-right-now.html\">rocketing upwards nationwide,<\/a> and even in (relatively) highly-vaccinated Seattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It feels a lot like March 2020 again&#8211;but somehow we can&#8217;t stomach a lockdown again.  We <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ebellm\/status\/1426330326565941253\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ebellm\/status\/1426330326565941253\">cancelled<\/a> a family get-together, and have cut out risk wherever we can, but the kids are still doing school in person.  Every option feels <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amcatanzaro\/status\/1426369532000604160\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amcatanzaro\/status\/1426369532000604160\">deranged<\/a>.  The youngest already had a close contact in his classroom and spent two weeks at home with us&#8211;thankfully he tested negative.  At this point it feels like &#8220;when&#8221; rather than &#8220;if&#8221;&#8211;and we ask ourselves if we&#8217;re making the right choices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whiplash.
